5 Underrated African Destinations to Explore

African Destinations

The pyramids of Egypt, safaris, and the beaches in Zanzibar-are these the only places that come to mind when planning a vacation in Africa? Well, you are not alone. It’s the case for many of us. I don’t know if it’s a reluctance to research other places or a fear of exploring the unknown that has made us stick to these known places for the longest time. With how vast and diverse the continent is, there are bound to be hidden gems that remain largely underexplored. If you are planning another safari, again for lack of destination ideas, check out these five underrated African destinations that you can explore for your next vacation.

1. The Simien Mountains, Ethiopia

While Ethiopia is famous for its coffee and ancient churches, the Simien Mountains offer dramatic landscapes that rival the Alps. Think jagged peaks, deep valleys, and rare wildlife like the Gelada baboon and Walia ibex. If you are craving raw, unfiltered nature, with streaks-of-sweat-running-down-your-back kind of adventure, then speak no further, for you just hit the jackpot with this one.

2. Bissau, Guinea-Bissau

I bet you overlook Bissau as a tourist destination. But how would you know what beauty lies in there if you’ve never been there? Bissau is a beautiful city steeped in Afro-Portuguese culture. What to do there? You can explore the colourful colonial buildings lining the streets, the bustling local markets, and the nearby Bijagós Archipelago, which offers untouched islands where women call the shots or just blend in with the locals by immersing yourself in their vibrant music and traditions.

3. Lompoul Desert, Senegal

If you are still one of those people who ultimately think, Dubai when picturing dunes, then it’s time to focus your lens on the motherland because you are about to capture the beauty of the Lompoul desert. Travellers to Senegal need to give Dakar or Lake Retba a breather and explore the Lompoul Desert, which is just a few hours north of Dakar. There are glamping tents where you can stay and enjoy a serene and unique desert experience.

4. São Tomé and Príncipe

Tucked away in the Gulf of Guinea, São Tomé and Príncipe is Africa’s second-smallest country and one of its best-kept secrets. With lush green rainforests, cocoa plantations, and pristine beaches, this island nation is a tropical paradise. It is perfect for ecotourism, birdwatching, hiking, snorkelling and diving. If you are not keen on crowded tourist destinations, then you’ve found the holy grail.

5. Lake Mutanda, Uganda

Nestled in the southwest of Uganda, near the borders of Rwanda and DR Congo, Lake Mutanda offers a tranquil retreat with breathtaking views of the Virunga Mountains. It’s an ideal spot to experience the natural beauty of Africa’s Great Lakes region and serves as a perfect base for gorilla trekking in the nearby Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. In case you’ve been thinking of testing out the viral “100 men vs. gorilla” debate, this will be the perfect place. Please DON’T! I’m just kidding…but seriously, don’t.

Africa is such a beautiful place that offers so much more than the usual hotspots. So, why don’t you do something different this time and explore one of these hidden gems? You never know; you just might discover your new favourite holiday destination.
