UBA Foundation National Essay Competition Witness A Historic Moment- PRESEC Students Top Two Years Uninterruptedly
Ariff Abdul Sabit of Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (Legon), has emerged winner of the United Bank for Africa Foundation’s National Essay Competition taking home the first prize of a whopping 5,000 dollars for tuition fees at the Bank’s Corporate Headquarters at Heritage Towers, Ridge, Accra, Ghana. The 5 th edition recorded a historic moment when Ariff clinched the first spot to ensure Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (Legon) win the competition for two consecutive times after Jason Ghansah won the 4 th edition. The Grand finale of the 5 th Edition witnessed lots of intriguing moments when the 10 finalists from nine different schools across the country met with intense competition to see who makes it to the top three and get the bragging right over the others. The final journey to the top three was keener as Labone Senior High School came into the finals strong with two students while Mfantsipim High School, KNUST Senior High School, Aburi Girls Senior High, St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Dormaa Senior High School, Opoku Ware High School, Wesley Grammar School and Presbyterian Boys Senior High School had one student each.
It was all tears of joy when Ariff Abdul Sabit from Presbyterian Boys Senior High School was announced winner with Manasseh Sampana Nam Mahime from St. Thomas Aquinas High School and Aburi Girls Senior High School’s Nana Adwoa Quayson walking home with the 3,500 dollars and 2,000 dollars, second and third prize respectively.
Speaking at the ceremony, Isong Udom, Managing Director of UBA Ghana congratulated all 10 finalists especially the three winners, and encouraged them to invest their time and energy in their education.
“It is one of our most cherish initiatives as a bank. We have invested over $150,000 into the UBA Foundation National Essay Competition for the past four years. We see you all as an integral part of our success story, so we entreat you all to be good ambassadors of the UBA brand,” Mr Udom said. Deputy Minister of Education, Mrs Barbara Ayisi Acher who was the special guest of honour, applauded UBA’s effort in sustaining the scholarship programme for the past five years. She urged other companies operating in Ghana to emulate the shining example of the UBA. The Director of Secondary Education Division, Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr Angela Tena Mensah noted; “The topic for the essay competition- Law enforcement a responsibility for all, is very important at this time. This is because lawlessness is spreading across”.
Each of the 10 finalists were given a UBA branded Laptop to go home as a token for the bold step taken and encourage them and others to participate in the competition. The announcement denotes that the Bank will now take care of 15 students who are enjoying grants in various universities.
The National Essay Competition, a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative of UBA (Ghana) Limited after its launch in Ghana in 2014, has provided a competitive platform to develop the intellectual and writing abilities of SHS students in Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal as well as granting winners fully paid scholarship into any University in Africa. UBA’s annual “READ AFRICA PROJECT” also awaits as it distributes literature books authored by African writers to a number of second cycle institutions across the country.
